Ryan Smith

Ryan Smith is an English midfielder who was born in Islington, London on 10th November 1986. Smith began his career with Arsenal, and represented England at youth level in his teenage years. He made his Gunners debut on 28th October 2003 against Rotherham in the League Cup. Smith made three more appearances for Arsenal, all of them in the same competition. He did take part in Dennis Bergkamp's testimonial, which he later said was one of the highlights of his career.

On 30th September 2005 Smith joined Championship outfit Leicester City on a season long loan. The winger made his Foxes debut on 1st October in a 1-1 draw with local rivals Derby. Smith scored his first senior goal for the club on 26th November against Sheffield United. After losing his place in the side due to inconsistent performances, Smith's loan was cut short and the midfielder returned to Highbury on 10th March 2006.

Smith signed a three year contract with Derby County on 4th August 2006. He made his Rams debut at Pride Park on August 6th in a 2-2 draw with Southampton. After an unspectacular start for Billy Davies side Smith found himself on the bench more often than not. In January when the likes of Stephen Pearson and Gary Teale arrived, Smith's opportunities in the first team were even more limited. On March 21st 2007 Ryan joined League 1 outfit Millwall until the end of the 2006/07 season.

After a successful loan spell, Smith joined Millwall permanently for £150,000 in July 2007. The former Arsenal man featured in matches for The Lions early in the campaign, but missed a large chunk of the season after an injury at Crewe in September. He was back in action by March 2008, but was largely unimpressive. He made just one league appearance for Millwall in 2008/09, and on 3rd October 2008 he was loaned to Southampton.

Smith joined Saints in an initial three month loan deal, and signed for the club permanently on 1st January 2009. His Saints debut came on 28th October, when he replaced Jake Thomson in the 77th minute of a 1-1 draw against Coventry. The former Derby player made a reasonably promising start to his Southampton career, but his form declined in the final months of the season as Saints plummeted towards League 1. Smith was released by the South Coast club on 2nd May 2009.

Smith signed a short term contract with Crystal Palace on 26th August 2009. He made his debut for the club a day later in a 2-0 defeat to Manchester City in the League Cup. Smith only played five other times for Palace, all from the bench. On 25th January 2010 he left the club after his contract expired.

After a brief trial with Conference side Grimsby a week earlier, Smith joined Major League Soccer side Kansas City Wizards on a two year contract. Smith enjoyed a success debut for The Wizards, scoring in a 4-0 win over DC United. The ex Saint had a successful run in his first season with the American club, starting 25 matches.

In June 2011 Smith left Kansas City for 'unspecified family reasons'. He joined Real Zaragoza on trial shortly after, but couldn't agree terms with the club.
