Pedro Miguel Cardoso Monteiro aka Pele is a Portuguese/Cape Verdean defender/midfielder who was born in Albufeira, Portugal on 2nd May 1978. He began his career in the lower reaches of Portuguese football with Imortal. Pele stayed there for five years before joining Faranse in 2002. A year later he moved to Belenenses and helped the club to a 9th placed finish in 2005. He scored a famous goal in a victory over Sporting on 6th March 2005.

On 19th July 2006 Pele signed for Championship outfit Southampton for an undisclosed fee. The former Belenenses man made his debut for the club on 6th August in a 2-2 draw at Derby. Although Pele was brought in as a centre half, he was quickly converted into a holding midfielder, a position he performed much better. Pele formed a very good midfield partnership with Jermaine Wright and helped the club reach the play-offs at the end of the campaign. He was particularly impressive in the winter months on the season. He controlled games at Leeds and Hull, helping Saints to 3-0 and 4-2 wins. Pele scored his first goal for the club against Leicester on 30th December 2006. He occasionally filled in at the back when necessary, but never looked entirely comfortable. Pele conceded a penalty in the play-off semi final first leg against Derby on 12th May 2007, a match which Saints lost 2-1.

On 9th August 2007 Pele signed for West Bromwich Albion for £1,000,000. The former Southampton man was largely used in squad rotation in 2007/08, helping Tony Mowbray's side reach promotion to the Premiership. Pele barely played at all in West Brom's 2008/09 Premiership campaign, starting just 3 matches in all competitions. On May 22nd 2009 the Cape Verde international was released from the club.

After an extended spell without a club, Pele signed a deal with Falkirk on 12th November 2009 until the end of the campaign. He made his debut on 21st November 2009 in a 2-0 win over Hamilton. Pele was given a run in the team at centre back, but fell out of favour in early 2010. He left the club at the end of the 2009/10 campaign.

On 6th August 2010 Pele signed with MK Dons on a non-contract basis. The former Baggie made his one and only appearance for the club on 10th August 2010 in a Carling Cup tie with Dagenham & Redbridge, but was forced off injured after just 31 minutes. In January 2011 Pele signed with non-league outfit Northwich Victoria.

Pele signed for Hednesford Town on August 10th 2011 on non-contract terms
