Neal Trotman is an English central defender who was born in Levenshulme, Manchester on 11th March 1987. Trotman began his career with Burnley before being released at the age of 18. He was picked up by Oldham Athletic in 2006, and made his Latics debut on 4th November 2006 in a League 1 clash against Cheltenham. Trotman's only other appearance for The Latics that season came a week later in the FA Cup against Kettering. He scored Oldham's third goal in a 4-3 win. In January he was sent out of loan to Conference side Halifax for the remainder of the 2006/07 campaign. As well as impressing in defence, Trotman proved his worth at the other end of the pitch, scoring 3 times in 12 matches for The Shaymen.
Trotman established himself as a Boundary Park regular in 2007/08. He scored in Oldham's FA Cup 1st round draw against Doncaster, but was then sent off in the replay. Trotman also netted in The Latics surprise 3-1 win at Leeds on January 1st 2008. The defenders form alerted a number of Championship clubs, and on 30th January 2008 Preston North End beat off competition from Plymouth to bring Trotman to Deepdale in a £500,000 three year deal. Trotman was brought in as a player for the future, rather than a player for now, and played in just three matches for Preston that season. His debut came on 19th April against Plymouth, in a match which ended 2-2.
Trotman was sidelined for the majority of the 2008/09 campaign through injury. He was sent out on loan to Colchester in March 2009 in an effort to regain match fitness. He played six times for The U's. Trotman made a fantastic start to the 2009/10 season, scoring in the 5-1 pasting of Morecambe in the Carling Cup on 11th August. He was then loaned to Southampton, and made his debut for the League 1 side on 22nd August in a 1-1 draw with Brentford. He initially started well for Saints, and scored his first goal for the club on 9th October against Southend. The defender had a dip in form late in the year however, and was dropped for Chris Perry. After a brief return to Preston, Trotman joined Huddersfield on loan in January. He made 21 appearances for The Terriers, scoring two goals, the first coming on 20th February against Hartlepool. Trotman returned to St Marys on 2nd March to line up against his former club, but could do nothing to stop Saints running out 5-0 winners.
Despite Preston being rooted to the bottom of The Championship table for much of 2010/11, Trotman was unable to break through to the first team. In January he was loaned to his old club Oldham for the rest of the campaign. Trotman played a further 18 times for The Latics.
In July 2011 Trotman signed for Rochdale.
