Juanmi is a Spanish attacker who was born in Coin, Spain on 20th May 1993. Juanmi came through the ranks at Malaga, making his senior debut at the age of 16 against Getafe in the Copa del Rey. Malaga lost the match 5-1, but more than a few people stood up and took notice when Juanmi found the net.
Malaga were taken over by sheikh Abdullah ben Nasser Al Thani in June 2010, and money was pumped into the team. Juamni initially retained his spot in the first team squad. He started 2010/11 well with a brace in a 5-3 win over Zaragoza. Juanmi made 17 appearances over the course of the campaign, scoring 4 goals. When big name players like Ruud van Nistelrooy arrived, Juanmi slipped down the pecking order at La Rosaleda. He featured just 6 times during 2011/12, scoring a single goal against Osasuna.
Juanmi scored in his solitary La Liga appearance against Mallorca at the start of the 2012/13 campaign. He appeared in a Champions League clash at Zenit, before being sent on loan to Segunda Division outfit Racing Santander. Juanmi was sent off in his second outing for Racing, and failed to score as the side was relegated to the third tier.
Juanmi's future was often called into question at Malaga, but when the club fell into financial trouble, he and several other youngsters received more playing opportunities. He was in and out of the side during 2013/14, scoring a few good goals, including a late one in a 2-1 win at Betis on 31st March.
Juanmi finally began to fulfil some of his early promise during 2014/15 as he was granted more responsibility under new coach Javi Gracia. In October/November he scored in consecutive matches against Rayo Vallecano, Real Sociedad and Eibar. He stepped it up during the early part of 2015, scoring the winner in a famous 1-0 win at Barcelona in February. On 31st March Juanmi made his full international debut in a 2-0 defeat to Holland at the Amsterdam Arena.
On 16th June 2015 Juanmi signed a four-year deal with Southampton for a reported fee of £5,000,000. The Spaniard looked fairly impressive during pre-season. Juanmi displayed some decent movement, and a good eye for goal. He looked a bit lightweight on occasions, however. He scored in pre-season games against Leipzig, KVV Quick and Feyenoord, as well as providing a decent assist in the 3-0 Europa League win over Vitesse on July 30th.
