Joseph Mills is an English Left back/midfielder who was born on October 30th 1989 in Swindon. He is the younger brother of fellow Southampton youth team graduate Matthew Mills. He represented England and U17 and U18 levels.

Mills made his professional debut for a youthful Southampton side that knocked Birmingham out of the League Cup on 26th August 2008. He was a second half substitute for Simon Gillett in a 2-0 win. Mills made his first league start against Barnsley on September 20th. He feature a further 8 times for Saints after that, but his performances were largely disappointing. He was one of the many young players who were thrown in too soon that season.

In February Mills joined League 1 promotion hopefuls Scunthorpe. Mills looked much more impressive for Scunny, operating in the division below and without the pressure of a relegation struggle. He helped Nigel Adkins side reach the play-offs that season, playing 14 times for The Iron.

Mills returned for Southampton for the 2009/10 season, having signed a 3 year contract in the summer following a decent pre season. Mills featured sporadically during the campaign, mainly from the bench, where he was hit and miss. He suffered the humiliation of being substituted against Exeter on Boxing Day, just 22 minutes after he had come off the bench himself. Many felt that would be the end for the youngster, but Mills bounced back well and impressed in both the Football League trophy semi-final first leg at MK Dons, and in the final itself against Carlisle.

Mills made 3 appearances for Southampton at the beginning of 2010/11, but was loaned out to Doncaster Rovers in October. Despite impressing for new Southampton manager Nigel Adkins at Scunthorpe two seasons previous, Adkins elected to farm Mills out to Championship Donny. Mills had another successful loan spell, and scored his first ever professional goal for Rovers against his old side Scunthorpe on New Year's day 2011, which he celebrated with a bizarre dance. He netted again exactly two months later at Derby.

In July 2011 Mills went on trial at Phil Brown's Preston but was not offered a contract. He returned to Southampton where he played for the development squad. On 22nd August 2011 Mills signed a one year deal with Reading. He made his debut for the Royals a day later as a substitute in a 2-1 League Cup defeat at Charlton.
