Dale Stephens is an English midfielder born in Bolton on 12th December 1989. Stephens started his career at Bury and made his debut as a late sub in a 3-0 home defeat to Peterborough on 24th February 2007. He made only two more appearances for The Shakers that season and was sent to Droylsden for a short loan spell in September 2007. Shortly after his return to Gigg Lane, Stephens netted his first senior goal in a 2-2 draw against Bradford on 22nd January. Stephens showed promise for Bury, featuring 9 times during 2007/08, but rejected the offer of a new contract to sign with Oldham instead.
Stephens failed to make a single first team appearance for his new side during 2008/09. He had a successful loan spell at League 2 side Rochdale, beginning in September 2009. He scored a goal on his debut for the Spotland side in a 3-3 draw at Morecambe. When Stephens had completed his 6 match loan with The Dale he returned to Oldham and was a regular for the rest of the 2009/10 campaign.
Stephens was a key component of the Oldham side which started the 2010/11 season so well. His goals from midfield helped the Boundary Park side reach the play-off positions during the first half of the campaign. He scored 8 in total, including a brace in the opening day 2-1 victory at Tranmere. Oldham's form began to dip in early 2011 however, as The Latics tumbled down the League after a rotten run. By March 24th 2011 Stephens was only too happy to sign on loan until the rest of the season with Southampton. The midfielder made his Saints debut as a sub in the 3-2 comeback win against MK Dons on 2nd April. Stephens was stretchered off three days later against Charlton, but recovered to start against former club Rochdale on 12th April. He played in three matches after that, but wasn't quite up to scratch, and had a tendency to play too many backwards and sideways passes when better options were available.
On 29th June 2011 Stephens signed for Charlton for an undisclosed fee. He marked his debut for The Addicks with two goals in a 3-0 win over Bournemouth on 6th August 2011.
