Aaron Martin is an English centre half, who was born in the Isle of Wight on 29th September 1989. Martin began his career at non league Eastleigh in 2007, and made 47 appearances in total for The Spitfires. Martin was signed by League 1 outfit Southampton in November 2009 after a successful trial for the reserves against Plymouth. He had previously had two unsuccessful trials at the club as a youngster
Martin spent most of the 2009/10 season in the reserves at St Marys, until March where he was loaned to Conference side Salisbury City. Martin played 14 times for Salisbury and even scored once. He returned to Southampton to start the final two matches of the season against Gillingham and Southend.
After a solid pre season, Martin was in contention for a starting place for the 2010/11 campaign. He impressed in his first appearance of the season against Premiership Bolton in the League Cup and again at Bristol Rovers four days later. Martin looked as though he could well be first in line to partner Jose Fonte at the back for the remainder of the season, but the managerial change of Nigel Adkins for Alan Pardew saw him fall out of favour. He sat behind Radhi Jaidi and Dan Seabourne in the pecking order and wouldn't feature for new manager Adkins until the FA Cup 3rd round tie against Blackpool on January 8th. He only made one league start after that, which was the comfortable 3-0 home win against Yeovil. After that he was limited to just a few cameo appearances from the bench. His contract was automatically renewed for another year in May 2011.
On 4th July 2011 Martin signed a new three year contract until 2014. He started the opening game against Leeds on August 6th, but looked slightly unconvincing. Martin spent most of 2011/12 on the bench behind Jos Hooiveld and Jose Fonte. He appeared in games over Christmas and New Year when injuries struck and looked ok. He was still a level below Hooiveld and Fonte however. Martin scored his first goal for Saints on January 7th, the winner in an FA Cup tie at Coventry. He missed a sitter at Nottingham Forest a week later, but made amends on February 18th with a goal against Derby in a 4-0 victory. Martin made just one further appearance after that, as a substitute at Peterborough on April 17th.
On 7th June 2012 Martin signed a loan deal with Crystal Palace for the duration of the 2012/13 season. He endured a nightmare first month at Selhurst Park as part of the side that lost its first three games and also suffered a 4-1 Carling Cup humiliation at Preston. The Eagles shot up the table after Martin was dropped. He made one final appearance on New Year's Day, a much happier 3-1 win over Wolves. He played for Saints at U21 level in a 2-2 draw with Tottenham in January, with his Selhurst Park loan being terminated by mutual consent. Martin joined Coventry in February for a much more productive loan spell.
